5 The Ulster Canal Greenway

Local Knowledge

This greenway is in the process of re-construction.  The plans for the original construction of the Ulster canal were first set in motion in the year 1831 and by 1841 the job was completed. It was then hoped to navigate between Lough Neagh to Lough Erne a distance of approximately 58 miles. The intention was to connect a commercial artery from East to West. Delays, lack of funding, inadequate water supply, it’s narrow gate locks and overall narrow width all contributed to it’s lack of success as a viable proposition. The construction of the railroad system which was to follow in the 1850s hailed a more efficient means of transportation.

With the demand for more safe off-road routes and trails for walking and cycling the re-construction of this greenway heralds a new era and a purpose for the old canal which will afford a safe and tranquil environment for everyone. Presently, access can be gained from the N2 roundabout opposite the premises of Maurice Graham and close to the Four Seasons hotel. From here one can proceed towards Rossmore park and return or visa versa. By the year 2020 the section between Middletown in Co Armagh and Smithborough in Co Monaghan will be completed creating a cross-border dimension and connecting communities.
